Tea tree oil use for babies

by Anne-Marie
(France)

My 18 months old daughter has a toe nail fungus, very mild so far but it's affecting most of her toes. Her doctor said there isn't any treatment as pills for adults are way too strong and nail polish is too toxic for her age. I was wondering if I could use diluted tea tree oil as I have been reading about its anti fungal properties... is she too young for it? If it is safe, how should I use it? I have been searching the web for weeks and haven't found any reliable information. Looking forward to your reply. Many thanks in advance. Anne-Marie

Tea Tree EO on Babies
by: Penny Keay

Hi Anna,

It is good that you ask before proceeding using essential oils on children under 2 years.

Tea Tree oil if diluted in a carrier oil such as Jojoba or Fractionated coconut oil is safe to use on children under 2 years at a 1 1/2% dilution.

In other words Put 6 drops of Tea Tree in 2 ounces of Carrier oil. Of course you can use any type of carrier oil.

Make sure the Tea Tree oil is as fresh as possible. As old Tea Tree oil may cause skin irritations as it has deteriorated.

Please realize it can take several weeks to months to eliminate Fungal infections on toes and toe nails. But be consistent and it should eventually clear.

Another suggestion is to soak the affected foot in a Salt water/ Vinegar bath for 15 minutes prior to applying the Tea tree/ carrier oil blend. The Salt water / Vinegar mix also helps to rid the body of fungal infections and of course cleans the area well too.

It should go without saying, but I will mention it here: If irritation or rashes appear discontinue use and consult a physician.

Thank you so so much Penny, very clear message and options. Not sure I will manage to keep her little impatient feet in a 15 min bath :-) but I will definitely try your solutions. Many thanks again.

Tea Tree oils for adult usage NEW
by: Anonymous

Erin,
You did not say if you were using this on a toenail(s) or where? How long have you been using the tea tree? Are you applying consistently or sporadically? Please dilute it in a carrier oil or lotion. Add 20-24 drops to 2 ounces of a carrier - Fractionated coconut oil is great to use.

Hope this helps. You can visit our website at birchhillhappenings dot net (if you are computer savvy) and e-mail me privately from our contact page if you need more help.
