The Patchouli essential oil is derived from the leaves of the Patchouli Tree (scientifically known as Pogostemon Cablin) commonly found in Asian Countries; Philippines, India, Malaysia, China and some in South America where the temperature is warm. The essential oil is obtained by distilling the leaves of the plant. Another process of obtaining the extract is by drying the foliage and then fermenting it before it is subjected to the distillation process. This plant is part of the Mint Family.
The Patchouli Essential oil is characterized by hues ranging from light yellow to dark brown. The consistency of the essential oil obtained is lightly viscous similar to that of a syrup to thicker. Additionally the scent may vary in intensity but in general it is herbaceous, sharp and musky in aroma. This oil type is considered as base note because of its distinct quality that the aroma native to the substance lasts long to any object it gets in contact with. Also, this essential oil has a shelf life of up to three years if stored properly. Specialists concluded that the longer the patchouli essential oil sits the more that it becomes potent in terms of its scent. The patchouli leaves on the other hand gets a more intense herbaceous odor the longer it is dried.
